Pine Wood Derby Jeep Written on March 10, 2010, by Chris.

Its that time a year again. A time when goodhearted young men take a stab at a block of wood and try to turn it into a sleek racer. Boy Scouts everywhere compete to build cars from blocks of wood and are awarded for their speed and creative design. Of course the real fun happens when these same young men turn to their adult roles models in search of guidance. Experience has taught us to push the envelope of design (aka cheat) and we gladly impart this wisdom to our children, and bonding then occurs.

Since a Jeep is essentially an aerodynamic brick the folks over at Rugged Ridge had a head start into turning their block of wood into a stylish racer. Their team of engineers fashioned a scale CJ8 Scrambler complete with: Fender Flares, Mirrors, Off Road Lights, Jerry Can, Hi Lift Jack, Tube Steps and Spare Tire Carrier from their pine block.

How did it fare? When Rugged Ridge turned their Jeep over to the young racer, they had hopes of only scoring a trophy in the Pine Wood Derby Car Show. However, the wooden model was apparently more aerodynamic than its larger counterparts and scored 3rd in the races.
